Japan Fusion Energy Council (J-Fusion) and The Fusion Cluster in the UK Sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Strengthen Collaboration in Fusion Energy
Japan Fusion Energy Council (J-Fusion) and The Fusion Cluster in the UK, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening collaboration in the fusion energy industry between Japan and the UK. This MoU aligns with the bilateral cooperation agreement signed today between the Japanese and UK governments on fusion energy development. Through robust industrial collaboration, both countries aim to accelerate the realization and commercialization of fusion energy. For many decades, both Japan and the UK have led global efforts to develop fusion energy.
The MoU sets a strong framework for collaboration as J-Fusion and The Fusion Cluster commit to working together to achieve the following objectives:
● Promote mutual understanding and strategic collaboration in fusion energy development
● Facilitate cooperation between Japanese and UK industries
● Contribute to the development of a global-scale fusion energy ecosystem
To achieve these goals, the following areas will be addressed by the MoU:
1. Information and Knowledge Sharing
Exchange of success stories, technical insights, regulatory trends, and market developments related to fusion energy.
2. Human Resource Development
Promotion of highly skilled personnel through joint training programs, academic exchanges, and mobility initiatives.
3. Industrial Collaboration
Identification and promotion of opportunities for joint research, supply chain integration, demonstration projects, and innovation partnerships.
4. Public Awareness and Stakeholder Engagement
Joint efforts to enhance public understanding and support for fusion energy through outreach activities, events, and stakeholder dialogues.
5. Collaboration with Government Agencies
Exploration of cooperative frameworks with relevant ministries, research institutions, and funding agencies in both countries.

About the Fusion Energy Industry Council of Japan (J-Fusion)
J-Fusion was established in 2024 with the goal of industrializing fusion energy. Fusion energy, known for its excellent characteristics such as carbon neutrality, abundant fuel supply, environmental sustainability, and safety, is gaining attention as a next-generation sustainable energy source. J-Fusion promotes its social implementation and the creation of new industries.
Its members include private companies, universities, research institutions, and public organizations. J-Fusion engages in a wide range of activities including technology development through industry-government-academia collaboration, policy proposals, international cooperation, and dialogue with young professionals. The Fusion Cluster brings together businesses, academia, investors and government agencies to get to fusion faster. Since it was established in October 2021, it has grown from a handful of companies to more than 300 organisations working in fusion energy.
